The lamps get lit, the house fills up, and everyone has dressed for it. Diwali light gathers people in, marks a fresh start and passes round as generosity. The best things to wear and give this season respond in kind: a polished case that catches the lamp, a pearl dial that shifts by evening, gold that looks warmer the later it gets.
This EDIT picks the watches and accessories that earn their place in that light.
Movado's Museum Velura is a 25mm gold watch that reads as accessories first. Gold dial, gold case, one continuous tone, so it picks up whatever light is in the room.
For him, the Movado Centurion sets a white dial in a yellow gold case on a steel bracelet. It's an automatic at 40mm, and the two metals keep it relaxed enough for a family dinner.
The Guess Jaq goes fully gold in 38mm, with case, dial and bracelet in a single tone. It's the easiest gold watch for men to give and the easiest to wear straight away.
Mother-of-pearl is the one dial material that looks different at four o'clock than it does at nine. Concord's Saratoga (30mm) pairs a white pearl dial with rainbow-coloured hour markers on a steel and yellow gold bracelet. The Mariner (29mm) takes the same two-metal bracelet with a pink pearl dial. If you're choosing for her, start with Saratoga.
The Guess Colette is the quieter route, with a white mother-of-pearl dial set with crystals in a 32mm gold-tone case.
The Tutima Flieger (41mm, automatic) has a dégradé grey dial that shades from lighter to darker, so the watch changes character as the light moves. A date window and a steel bracelet keep it practical.
West End's Classics for women (32mm) has a rhodium dial, a bright and reflective silver finish, with an open heart window that shows the movement working underneath.
Frederique Constant's Classics Premiere (38.5mm, automatic) puts a salmon dial on a steel bracelet, a warm colour on a cool metal.
Accessories carry the light closer to the face. Guess's Aurora Fringes necklace and earrings hang crystal-set fringes in gold-tone that move as you do. The Coin & Crystals bracelet and studs are simpler, and they suit someone who wears one piece every day.
Charriol's Zen earrings pair twisted steel cable rings with rose gold detail, in the cable construction the house is known for.
Diwali asks a lot of what you wear and what you give. Choose pieces that respond to the light around them, and they'll keep doing it long after the lamps are put away.
